~Ryan knew better, not to mention she would probably yell at him if he was caught again, but dammit, he needed a smoke. Sometimes a little nicotine was perfect in the afternoon.
He fished a bent cigaret out of his trousers. Ryan had bummed the thing hours ago and to his credit, he had managed to keep it relatively undamaged. Thank god. His pocket was a horrible place to have kept it, but he was forced to keep it hidden while she was around. He gave one last quick look around to make sure she wasn't near and finally brought his abused cigaret to life.
Ryan gave it a long inhale. Finally, relief. Bad habit or not, he felt a lot better. Even misshapen, this little cigaret had managed to put his mind at ease. Slowly, he made his way across the college campus, enjoying every step of his quiet smoke break.
He would find some other day to quit; today had just been far to stressful.~
This is a new OC I have been working on. Hopefully we will see more of Ryan in the future. I quite enjoy how this turned out, however, I apologize for the horrendous background. I still suck with that.
Uhg, I hate smoking but I love the way you wrote out that scene. It was just so nicely pieced together, I couldn't help but appreciate it. Also, loving the cleanness of the actual image. May I ask how you did the background?
Background is actually a re-worked photograph. I basically threw the thing into Adobe Illustrator and used Live Trace to reduce it down to its basic color components. Then I threw it back into Photoshop and gave it a little line work. I was going to draw a background from scratch but it was like 6am and I just wanted to post the bloody thing so I could go to bed. I know, I suck.
I usually have a back story behind the images I draw, but I only recently decided to start putting them down. I figure it adds a little depth and context to the image. It also distracts from my shittyness as an artist.
I don't think you're a shitty artist. I think you have wonderful work and you shouldn't be so critical of yourself.
Also, I wondered if it was from a photo. It had that cleanness to it, but it fits with your work. I think photoshop has a filter that could simplify the colors for you without you having to live trace in AI. Or at very least I know you can change color settings in photoshop somewhere. It might save you a lot of work if you check into it.
Swapping back and forth between Photoshop and Illustrator is basically par for the course no matter what I am doing, especially when I am doing actual graphic design. I always have them both open so I can do the entire process in less than a minute or so. As far as I know there is no better looking or quicker way to flatten photographs into just a few colors. I also use Illustrator as my automatic line art cleaning machine.
Ehh, It will probably be a couple hundred hours of work before I put myself out of the shitty bracket. I certainly am better than a lot of the shlubs out there but I have years to go before I get "good". There are still a lot of things I struggle with, especially backgrounds. Someday though.
Smoking cures Parkinson's!
